Summary
New Zealand has four public holidays during the Christmas and New Year period in 2026-27 — Christmas Day (Friday 25 December), Boxing Day observed (Monday 28 December), New Year’s Day (Friday 1 January 2027) and the Day after New Year’s Day observed (Monday 4 January 2027). These are significant dates to note for the New Zealand Christmas public holidays 2026 — all four are national public holidays applying to all workers throughout New Zealand; the first full working day back after the break is Tuesday 5 January 2027.
New Zealand does not observe Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve as public holidays — unlike some Australian states (Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory, which have part-day public holidays on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve), New Zealand has no equivalent; the four Christmas-New Year public holidays are the full entitlement
The Christmas-New Year period is New Zealand’s busiest holiday season — roads, airports, camping grounds, beaches and national parks see peak traffic from mid-December through to late January; those intending to travel over Christmas and New Year should book accommodation and transport well in advance; the school summer holidays in New Zealand run from late January to early February for most regions, meaning the Christmas-New Year period is the most congested part of the summer

Christmas Day — Friday 25 December 2026
Christmas Day is a national public holiday in New Zealand. In 2026 it falls on a Friday, creating a natural four-day weekend with the Boxing Day observed holiday on the following Monday.
Boxing Day — observed Monday 28 December 2026
Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December 2026. Under New Zealand’s Holidays Act 2003, when a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday and an employee does not normally work that day, it transfers (or “Mondayises”) to the following Monday.
The observed Boxing Day public holiday is therefore Monday 28 December 2026.
Important note for workers: Employees cannot claim both Saturday 26 December and Monday 28 December as separate public holidays. The Saturday is the actual Boxing Day; the Monday is the substitute. Workers are entitled to one Boxing Day public holiday — which day they observe depends on their usual working pattern.
New Year’s Day — Friday 1 January 2027
New Year’s Day is a national public holiday in New Zealand. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, creating a three-day weekend from 1 to 3 January.
Day after New Year’s Day — observed Monday 4 January 2027
New Zealand is one of a small number of countries that observes 2 January as a statutory national public holiday — the “Day after New Year’s Day.” It is enshrined in the Holidays Act 2003.
In 2027, 2 January falls on a Saturday — so the observed holiday Mondayises to Monday 4 January 2027.
This means the full New Year long weekend in 2027 runs from Friday 1 January to Monday 4 January — four consecutive days off with no leave required.

How to maximise your leave
With Christmas and New Year both falling on Fridays in 2026-27, New Zealand workers are well-placed to extend their break with minimal annual leave.
Option 1 — Eight days off with no leave required: The Christmas long weekend (25-28 December, four days) plus the New Year long weekend (1-4 January, four days) together give eight days off with zero leave taken — though there are three working days in between (29, 30, 31 December).
Option 2 — Eleven consecutive days off using three days of leave: Book Tuesday 29, Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 December as annual leave — combined with the Christmas long weekend (25-28 Dec) and the New Year long weekend (1-4 Jan), this gives eleven consecutive days off from 25 December to 4 January 2027.
Option 3 — Extended break with more leave: Book additional leave from Monday 22 December through to 4 January — using approximately seven days of annual leave (22, 23, 24 Dec and 29, 30, 31 Dec plus any additional days), workers can achieve an extended break of up to 17 days, subject to employer approval.
New Zealand’s Christmas-New Year public holidays — the rules
New Zealand’s public holiday rules for the Christmas-New Year period are set by the Holidays Act 2003:
Mondayisation: When a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday and the employee does not normally work that day, the holiday transfers to the next working day (Monday, or Tuesday if Monday is already a public holiday). This applies to Boxing Day (observed Monday 28 December) and the Day after New Year’s Day (observed Monday 4 January 2027).
Maximum of four public holidays: Workers can only claim a maximum of four public holidays during the Christmas and New Year period — Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the Day after New Year’s Day. No doubling up on the Saturday public holiday and its Monday substitute.
Working on a public holiday: Employees who work on a public holiday are entitled to time-and-a-half pay for all hours worked, plus an alternative holiday (a day in lieu) if the day would otherwise have been a working day for them.
No Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve public holidays: Unlike some Australian states, New Zealand does not observe Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve as public holidays of any kind — not even part-day.
Regional anniversary holidays in December
New Zealand also has regional anniversary days — public holidays specific to each province. Two regional anniversary days fall close to the Christmas period:
| Region | Anniversary Day | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Canterbury | Canterbury Anniversary Day | Friday 13 November 2026 |
| Westland | Westland Anniversary Day | Monday 30 November 2026 |
| Marlborough | Marlborough Anniversary Day | Monday 2 November 2026 |
No regional anniversary days fall in the Christmas-New Year period itself (December through early January) — the summer break period is free of regional holidays.
