Summary

Rate alerts are free and available on the OrbitRemit app set a target exchange rate for any currency pair and get a push notification the moment the rate hits your target; no limit on how many alerts you can set. With OrbitRemit rate alerts, you can stay informed about the best exchange rates available.

Timing your transfer matters exchange rates move constantly; even a small improvement in the rate can mean hundreds of dollars more for your family over the course of a year. Using OrbitRemit rate alerts can help you catch those improvements.

Set up takes under two minutes Settings → Notifications → Setup Rate Alerts → select your currencies → enter your target rate → done

Exchange rates move every day. Sometimes every hour. The rate you see on Monday morning may be significantly better or worse than what is available on Thursday afternoon and for people sending money home regularly, that difference adds up.

Most people send money when they happen to think of it, or when family needs it. That is completely understandable. But if you have some flexibility in timing, waiting for a better rate can meaningfully increase how much your family receives without spending an extra dollar.

OrbitRemit’s rate alerts take the guesswork out of it. Set your target rate once, and we will notify you the moment it is hit.

Why exchange rates matter for your family

When you send AUD $500 home, the exchange rate determines exactly how much your family receives. A better rate means more rupees, pesos, dong, taka or tālā arriving at the other end without you sending a single dollar more.

Here is a simple example for an AUD to INR transfer:

Exchange rateAUD $500 sentINR received
54.00AUD $500INR 27,000
55.00AUD $500INR 27,500
56.00AUD $500INR 28,000

A difference of just 2 rupees in the rate means INR 1,000 more for your family from the same AUD $500 transfer. If you send monthly, that is INR 12,000 more per year without spending any extra.

Exchange rates fluctuate based on economic data, central bank decisions, global events and market sentiment. Rates can move 1-3% in a single day around major events like interest rate decisions. You do not need to follow the news to benefit you just need to know when your target rate arrives.

What are rate alerts?

A rate alert is a notification that tells you when a currency exchange rate reaches a level you have chosen.

You set a target rate for example, “notify me when AUD to INR reaches 56.00” and OrbitRemit monitors the rate in the background. The moment the rate goes above your target, you get a push notification on your phone. You can then open the app and send immediately, locking in the rate before it moves again.

Rate alerts are:

  • Free no cost to set up or use
  • Unlimited set as many as you want, across as many currency pairs as you want
  • Automatic running in the background; no need to check the app manually
  • Instant push notification arrives as soon as the rate is hit

How to set up a rate alert

Rate alerts are available on the OrbitRemit mobile app available on the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android). The feature is not available on the web version.

Step by step:

  1. Open the OrbitRemit app and log in to your account
  2. Tap the Settings tab in the bottom right corner
  3. Under Notifications, tap Setup Rate Alerts
  4. Tap Add New Rate Alert
  5. Select your send currency (e.g. AUD or NZD)
  6. Select your receive currency (e.g. INR, PHP, VND, NPR, IDR or any other)
  7. Enter your target rate the rate at which you want to be notified
  8. Tap Add

That’s it. OrbitRemit will send you a push notification whenever the exchange rate goes above your target rate.

You can set multiple alerts for the same currency pair at different levels, and separate alerts for different corridors. There is no limit on how many alerts you can have active at the same time.

How to choose your target rate

Not sure what rate to aim for? Here are three approaches:

1. Check the current rate and set a target slightly above it If the current AUD to PHP rate is 38.00, set an alert at 38.50 or 39.00. You will be notified if the rate improves from where it is today.

2. Look at where the rate has been recently The OrbitRemit app shows the current live rate. If you have been watching the rate for a few weeks, you will have a sense of its recent range. Set your target near the upper end of that range.

3. Work backwards from what you want your family to receive If you are sending AUD $300 and want your family to receive at least INR 16,500, divide: 16,500 ÷ 300 = 55.00. Set your alert at 55.00.

What to do when your alert fires

When you get a push notification that your target rate has been reached:

  1. Open the OrbitRemit app immediately rates move fast, and the favourable rate may not last long
  2. Check the live rate confirm the rate is still at or above your target
  3. Start your transfer the rate is locked in when you confirm your transfer, not when you log in
  4. Complete payment promptly if you are using bank transfer, complete your payment the same day to lock in the rate

Note: The rate you see when you start a transfer is the rate that applies at the moment you confirm. If you start a transfer and the rate changes before you confirm, the updated rate will be shown before you finalise.

Tips for getting the most from rate alerts

Set multiple alerts at different levels. Set one at your ideal rate and one at a rate you would be happy with. This way you will be notified if the rate reaches either threshold.

Make sure push notifications are enabled. A rate alert is only useful if you actually receive the notification. Check that push notifications are enabled for the OrbitRemit app in your phone’s settings.

Have your transfer ready to go. Good exchange rates can be brief. Before setting your alert, make sure your recipient is already saved in the app and your payment method is set up. When the alert fires, you want to be able to send in minutes.

Consider your urgency. Rate alerts work best when you have flexibility in timing. If your family needs money urgently, send immediately do not wait for a better rate. Rate alerts are for transfers where you have a few days of flexibility.
