How to apply for a New Zealand passport

Published

New Zealand passport

For migrants who have become New Zealand citizens, obtaining your passport is a typical next step. Understanding the process of how to apply for a New Zealand passport will save you precious time and effort, so follow this guide to help you get started!

1. Gather everything you need

Before you begin the application process, make sure you have everything you need to apply ready to go. This includes:

A RealMe login: you will likely already have one from your citizenship application. If not, you’ll be asked to create one when you start your application

Personal details: name, date of birth, place of birth, gender, height, eye colour, contact number, email, residential address, parents’ full name as stated on your birth certificate.

A device with internet access and a camera: use your phone, tablet or computer and follow the instructions provided to take a selfie for identity verification.

An identity referee: this is someone who can confirm your identity. They must:

  • Be 16 or older
  • Have known you for at least a year
  • Agree to be your referee (they may be contacted)
  • Be able to complete an online identity check

You will need to include these details about your referee in the application:

  • New Zealand passport number
  • Full name
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth
  • Email address

A passport photo: the image must be less than 6 months old, only of you, in colour and digital (.jpeg format). You can have your photo taken at a pharmacy, Warehouse Stationery store or by a friend or family member.

2. Pay and submit your application

Start your application online, which is the fastest way to apply. Before you can submit, you will need to fill in the required details (mentioned above), upload your photo and pay the fee. The standard fees for online applications are NZD$215 for an adult passport, and NZD$125 for a child.

If you need to apply by post or in person, download and print a PDF passport application from the Department of Internal Affairs website.

3. Sit back and wait

Once your passport application is paid for and submitted, you can sit back and wait for it to be delivered to the address provided in the application! If you have chosen the urgent service, you also have the option to collect from a DIA office in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.

Good luck with your journey to obtaining a New Zealand passport! By following the steps in this guide, along with advice from the New Zealand Passports Office, you will be well on your way.
