Summary

Osko is the payment service that makes bank transfers arrive in seconds in Australia — operated by BPAY Group and launched in February 2018 on the New Payments Platform (NPP), Osko handles the real-time messaging that moves money between bank accounts almost instantly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; it is the reason a payment sent on Sunday night arrives before Monday morning

Osko and PayID work together but are different things — PayID is the addressing service (linking a phone number or email to your bank account); Osko is the payment service that actually moves the money in real time; when you send money to someone’s PayID, Osko is what makes it instant

You do not need a PayID to use Osko — you can make a real-time Osko payment using a traditional BSB and account number; if your bank supports NPP (which virtually all Australian banks do), Osko is already available to you with no setup required

If you have ever sent money to a friend on a Saturday night and watched it appear in their account within seconds — that was Osko. Most Australians have used Osko hundreds of times without knowing its name. It is the invisible infrastructure behind every instant bank transfer in Australia.

Here is how it works and how it fits into Australia’s payment landscape alongside PayID, BPAY and PayTo.

What is Osko Australia?

Osko is a payment overlay service built on top of the New Payments Platform (NPP) — Australia’s national real-time payment infrastructure launched in February 2018. Osko was developed by BPAY Group (now part of Australian Payments Plus) and was the first service launched on the NPP.

The best way to think about the relationship:

  • The NPP is the rail — the infrastructure that connects 100+ Australian financial institutions and enables real-time payment messaging and settlement
  • Osko is the service that runs on the rail — the branded payment product that consumers and businesses use to move money instantly
  • PayID is the addressing service — a way to link a memorable identifier (mobile number, email) to your bank account so others can pay you without needing your BSB

When you send money to someone’s PayID in your banking app, you are using Osko over the NPP. When you send money to a BSB and account number and it arrives within seconds, that is also Osko over the NPP.

Who operates Osko? BPAY Group, which is part of Australian Payments Plus (AP+) — the organisation that also operates BPAY, PayID and eftpos.

How Osko works

When you initiate a real-time payment in your banking app, here is what happens behind the scenes in under 10 seconds:

  1. You enter the payment details — PayID (phone number or email) or BSB and account number, and the amount
  2. Your bank sends a payment message through the NPP’s infrastructure
  3. Osko routes the message to the recipient’s bank in real time
  4. The recipient’s bank verifies and credits the account — the funds appear in the recipient’s balance almost immediately
  5. Both banks receive confirmation — you get a receipt, the recipient sees the money

The entire process typically completes in under 10 seconds. The NPP runs 24/7, 365 days a year — which is why Osko payments arrive instantly on weekends and public holidays, unlike traditional bank transfers that wait for the next business day.

Osko vs PayID — what is the difference?

This is the most common point of confusion. Osko and PayID are related but distinct:

OskoPayID
What it isThe payment service — moves the moneyThe addressing service — identifies the recipient

FunctionProcesses real-time transfersLinks phone/email to a bank account
Required?Yes — all real-time NPP payments use OskoOptional — you can use BSB instead
Set up required?None — automatic if your bank supports NPPYes — register your PayID with your bank

In practice: When you “pay someone via PayID,” you are using PayID to look up their bank account and Osko to move the money. PayID is the address book; Osko is the delivery service.

You can use Osko without PayID — enter a BSB and account number instead of a PayID, and the transfer is still processed in real time via Osko over the NPP.

Key features of Osko

Real-time, 24/7: Osko payments settle almost instantly, any time of day or night including weekends and public holidays. No more waiting until the next business day.

280-character payment description: Osko allows you to include a descriptive message with your payment — up to 280 characters. This is significantly more information than traditional bank transfers allowed and makes reconciliation easier for businesses.

No setup required: If your bank is connected to the NPP (which virtually all Australian banks are), Osko is automatically available. You do not need to register, download anything or configure anything. It just works.

Free: Osko is free for consumers. Banks do not charge a fee to send or receive Osko payments.

Payments reach the NPP in $7 billion per day: The NPP — and Osko on top of it — now processes approximately $7 billion in payments each day in Australia. Osko-enabled transactions account for more than 35% of all account-to-account transfers in the country.

Does my bank support Osko?

If your bank is connected to the NPP — which includes all major Australian banks and most smaller institutions — it supports Osko. The full list includes:

  • CommBank ✅
  • ANZ ✅
  • NAB ✅
  • Westpac ✅
  • ING ✅
  • Macquarie ✅
  • Bendigo Bank ✅
  • Bank Australia ✅
  • Most credit unions and mutual banks ✅

100+ Australian financial institutions are connected to the NPP. The Osko logo may or may not appear in your banking app — many banks simply process real-time payments through Osko without prominently branding it.

How to make an Osko payment

You likely already use Osko without realising it. In most banking apps, when you go to transfer money, any payment to a PayID or a BSB/account number that arrives in seconds is an Osko payment.

To send an Osko payment:

  1. Open your banking app and go to Transfer or Pay Anyone
  2. Enter the recipient’s PayID (phone number, email) or BSB and account number
  3. Enter the amount
  4. Add a payment description (optional but useful — up to 280 characters)
  5. Confirm

If the recipient’s bank supports NPP, the money arrives in seconds. If the recipient’s bank does not support NPP for that account type, it may fall back to a slower processing pathway — but this is rare given NPP’s near-universal adoption.

The NPP family — how everything fits together

The NPP is Australia’s real-time payment infrastructure. Built on the NPP are three services:

Osko — the original and most widely used NPP service; handles real-time push payments (person-to-person and business payments)

PayID — the addressing layer; links mobile numbers, email addresses and ABNs to bank accounts; works with Osko

PayTo — the newest NPP service; enables businesses to pull payments from customer accounts with pre-authorised agreements; the modern replacement for direct debit

All three are operated by Australian Payments Plus and all run on the same underlying NPP infrastructure. They are complementary, not competing.
