Becoming an Australian citizen can be a huge achievement for migrants, accompanied by numerous benefits including the right to vote, ability to apply for an Australian passport and sense of security of. If you’re in the process of applying for Australian citizenship, this guide will help navigate the process, including eligibility requirements, steps and tips for a successful application.

1. Determine your eligibility

Before starting your application, it’s essential to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for Australian citizenship. You must:

  • Be age 18-60
  • Be a permanent resident: you must hold a permanent residency visa
  • Be of good character: You must pass a character test which involves police checks and a review of your immigration history
  • Intend to live in Australia or maintain a close, continuing association: you should plan to live in Australia or maintain close ties if you live overseas.

There are some special eligibility conditions for certain New Zealand citizens who hold a:

  • Special Category visa (SCV)
  • New Zealand stream Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa and their New Zealand citizen family members holding a Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa.
2. Satisfy the residency requirement

Generally, you need to have lived in Australia for four years, including 12 months as a permanent resident. You should not have been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in total in the past four years, and for no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying.

3. Prepare for citizenship test

To get ready for your test, there are many useful resources on the Department of Home Affairs website. The Australian Citizenship: Our Common Board is a handy information booklet, available in English and a range of other languages. You can also listen to a podcast series or do a practice test to get you ready for the real thing.

4. Prepare your documentation

Gather the necessary documents to support your application. You’ll need to provide a range of documents to prove your identity and show you have not had any serious criminal convictions. These include:

  • A current document with your photograph and/or signature: Australian driver licence, passport, UNHCR document, national identity card or DFTTA
  • Evidence of your current residential address: Utilities notice (electricity, gas or water bill), bank notice, rental contract or rates notice

  • Evidence of your identity in the community: Passport-sized photograph and identity declaration signed by an Australian citizen with authority
  • Evidence of when you first arrived in Australia and your present country of citizenship: Current and previous passport, travel document with visa such as FDTTA or ImmiCard

If you need to have documents sent from overseas, make sure you account for the time taken for this process.

5. Submit your application

You can apply for Australian citizenship online through the Department of Home Affairs website. Follow these steps:

  • Create an ImmiAccount: Register an account on the Department of Home Affairs website

If you’re between 18-59 years old, you will also need to do the citizenship test to assess your knowledge of Australia and the responsibilities of citizenship.

7. Attend citizenship ceremony

Once your application has been approved, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony. This is a significant and celebratory event! During the ceremony you’ll receive your Certificate of Australian Citizenship, proof of your new status as an Australian citizen!
