New Zealand citizenship

New Zealand, known for its beautiful landscapes and friendly people, is a dream destination for many migrants. If you’ve been living in New Zealand and want to make it your permanent home, applying for citizenship is the next logical step. This guide will take you through the process of applying for New Zealand citizenship, helping you understand the requirements and steps to becoming a Kiwi.

1. Determine your eligibility

Before starting your application, check if you meet the eligibility criteria for New Zealand citizenship, which includes:

  • Residency: Have been a resident of New Zealand for at least 5 years
  • Good character: No serious criminal convictions or significant issues with immigration authorities
  • Language skills: A basic understanding of English for everyday conversation and official documents
  • Intention to stay: Intent to continue living in New Zealand or maintain a connection to the country
2. Prepare your documents

When applying for New Zealand citizenship by grant, as most migrants do, you need to provide certain documents to prove your identity, including:

  • A passport-style photo of yourself
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport and/or travel document

In some cases you may need to provide further documentation and/or get an identity referee or witness to support your application. If you’re about to start your application, check out which documents you need to get ready here.

3. Apply and pay

You can apply for New Zealand citizenship online, in person or by post. If you apply online, make sure you have:

  • A RealMe login: you will be prompted to create one if you don’t already have one
  • A device with internet access and camera: to complete an identity check
  • Digital copies of your photo and documents
  • An identity referee
  • A payment method to pay the fee: $470.20 for adults (16 and over), $235.10 for children (15 and under)

If you apply in person or by post, make sure you download and prepare the correct forms and documentation. Check this page for the right form to use and further instructions on each application process.

4. Wait for approval

It can take between 3-14 months to find out if your application has been approved. You can check the progress of your application at any time, using RealMe. Simply click ‘Continue saved application’ at the bottom of this page. You can find more handy information on what to do while you wait for approval on New Zealand’s government website.

5. Attend a citizenship ceremony

Once your application has been approved, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony. This is a significant and celebratory event! After the ceremony, you’ll officially be a New Zealand citizen.

Tips for a successful application

  • Ensure accuracy: Double check all information and documents before submitting
  • Stay up to date: Keep track of any updates or changes to the application process by regularly checking the New Zealand Government website.

Good luck with your journey to becoming a New Zealand citizen! By following the steps in this guide, along with advice from the New Zealand Government, you will be well on your way.
