The changes New Zealand’s skilled migrant community has been preparing for since September 2025 are now in effect. From today, 24 August 2026, the Skilled Migrant Category operates under a significantly updated framework — two new residence pathways, simplified wage thresholds, extended English language test validity and a new pathway for CPA Australia accountants. These are key aspects of the NZ SMC changes August 2026.
Here is a summary of what changed today.
What is live from 24 August 2026
Two new residence pathways
Skilled Work Experience Pathway For migrants with genuine long-term skilled work experience in New Zealand:
- 5 years of relevant skilled work experience overall
- At least 2 years of that experience in New Zealand
- Earning at least 1.1x the SMC median wage (NZD $35.00/hour × 1.1 = NZD $38.50/hour)
- 5-month wage grace period from visa grant
Trades and Technician Pathway For qualified tradespeople and technicians:
- Level 4 or higher qualification
- At least 4 years of post-qualification experience
- At least 18 months of experience in New Zealand
- Earning at least the SMC median wage (NZD $35.00/hour)
Simplified wage thresholds
From 24 August 2026, most SMC applicants will only need to meet one SMC wage threshold, rather than one rate for their work experience and a higher rate when they apply for residence. This simplification removes one of the most confusing aspects of the previous system — applicants now need to meet the wage threshold that applied when they started gaining skilled work experience and maintain at least that rate when applying.
CPA Australia accountants now eligible
From 24 August 2026, accountants who can undertake the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant in New Zealand and who have membership with Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia will be eligible under the SMC pathway. This is a new recognised occupational registration that opens the SMC to a broader group of accounting professionals.
English language test validity extended
From 24 August 2026, English language test results will be valid for 5 years instead of 2 years if you have an eligible occupational registration. This applies to both the primary applicant and their partner if included in the application. Previously, tests needed to be retaken every 2 years — a significant cost and inconvenience removed.
Red and amber occupation lists confirmed
Two occupation lists now determine pathway eligibility:
Red list: Occupations not eligible for either new pathway — must use the existing points-based pathway.
Amber list: Occupations eligible for the Skilled Work Experience Pathway only, with stricter requirements — at least 5 years of experience specifically in New Zealand and earnings of at least 1.2x the median wage (NZD $42.00/hour).

Draft EOIs deleted today
All unsubmitted draft Expressions of Interest in ImmiAccount were permanently deleted at the start of today’s changes. If you had a draft EOI you did not submit before the deadline, you will need to start a new EOI under the updated system.
Coming in 2027
A future change — not yet in effect — will allow migrants who need up to 12 additional months of skilled work experience to extend their Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) to complete the experience required for residence. This extension will be available from 2027.
What has not changed
- Age requirement: 55 or younger at time of application
- The points-based pathway (6 points) still exists for those who do not qualify under the new pathways
- Health and character requirements remain unchanged
- The application process via Immigration Online remains the same
